Follow the manufacturer's schedule
The owner's manual lists service intervals for oil, filters and other parts. Follow it, and keep a log of hours run and work done.
Before each use
- Check the engine oil level.
- Check the coolant level on water-cooled engines.
- Check the fuel level and look for leaks.
- Look at the air filter and the battery connections.
Regular care
- Change the oil and the oil, fuel and air filters at the intervals in the manual.
- Keep fuel clean. Dirty or old fuel blocks filters and injectors.
- Keep the generator clean and dry, with air flowing freely around it.
Run it under load
A generator that sits unused for months can fail to start when you need it. Start it regularly and run it with a load for a while, so the engine reaches working temperature.
When to call for help
Unusual noise, smoke, loss of power or fuel leaks mean the machine should be checked by a qualified technician.
